WE HAVE ALMOST SAVED GAMING.
Or have we? Can we still save it?

All it would have taken was a million signatures from EU citizens.

Don't we have a million gamers in the EU who are eligible to vote?

Here's probably the last update from #StopKillingGames :

if anyone would even care to make better games for the blind I would had signed but my apathy for sighted devs and players is near 100%
in reply to patricus

@patricus Interesting. I am an indie game developer and a sound designer / electronic music producer.
If I knew I had a public that'd enjoy a sightless game, I could try and make something. I feel like there ought to be a recurring game jam for audio-only games too. If you can reach a lot of blind players, maybe we could get some indie game devs interested in making for that crowd...
in reply to unfa🇺🇦

nomore mini games or arcade games, please. Market is oversaturated with that slop
in reply to patricus

@patricus Well, I already have one indie (FOSS) game in the pipeline... since 2020. And I don't think you'd consider it that big, anyway.

I'd love to know what do visually impaired people value in games! Do you like dialogue-heavy games? Or music games? Abstract games? Games rendering a 3D sound space?

Do you have any reference games you could point me towards for research?

in reply to unfa🇺🇦

well, 3d spaces are super confusing to us, dialogue heavy games are usually called story games in our circle, for me if a game has more depth than clicking one button over and over it's ok lol
in reply to patricus

@patricus
It's a bit like the US vote in 2024. You cannot in good conscience vote for Kamala Harris because she is a two faced lying politician ex-cop with no firm commitments on Gaza.

If you have any games at all that you like, any at all, then you'll do it for games. So that they can survive for the future generation.

This will NOT get you better games for non-sighted people. This will change NOTHING in that regard. But it will save whatever games that do come out in this category.

in reply to Madagascar_Sky

@Madagascar_Sky yeah, but most of them are already dead, so what to save? TLOU 1 and 2 and Brok the investigator are the only games worth saving.
in reply to patricus

@patricus
So that the ones that are like TLOU 1&2 that come out in the future can be saved.

Shade of the mango tree that you will never see and all.

in reply to Madagascar_Sky

@Madagascar_Sky blind people are averted to old games often enough, that old unsupported games would naturally die anyway.
in reply to patricus

@patricus
There is nothing 'natural' about games dying. HL1&2, TeamFortress, Ultima, are all games that are playable today.

But since the introduction of server side components and always online policies newer games are dying when their servers shut off.

This initiative is about saving new games that will come henceforth. Not many people care about blind accessibility. But those who care and will make games, do it for them. Care for things that matter to YOU. Save them.

@Madagascar_Sky if a dev wants to kill of a game they can do it, I won't stop them, I respect wishes of the devs that bring out good stuff to the table.
in reply to patricus

@patricus @Madagascar_Sky I'd argue game developers don't want to see their blood, sweat and years of life be flushed down the drain after a couple years on the market.

As a professional in the field of game developement I am always sad to learn a game I was working on has been killed or never saw the light of day. Yeah it's a job, but it's also art.

In another 25 years games that come out today will be considered retro.
And possibly almost none of the big ones will be playable still...

in reply to patricus

@patricus As @Madagascar_Sky has noted - the practice of destroying media you have purchased as a good (not a service) is legally untested, but under current EU law it seems like it's illegal. But unless we get a million signatures EU gov't won't spend time to evaluate that and make a ruling. And until nobody cares to say if it's legal or not - companies exploit that "undefined" state. If this remains uncontested, I expect Blu-Rays and books to start being remotely bricked to make you buy more.

i don't sign anything that requires gov id and/or personal location (unless i'm forced by law, like giving papers to gov insurance or voting)
in reply to hacknorris

@hacknorris
As one of my favourite youtubers likes to say

"You may not fuck with politics, but politics will fuck with you."

This isn't to get you to sign. It's just an observation on your situation. I would like it if you did sign though.

in reply to Madagascar_Sky

@Madagascar_Sky if it WILL NOT ask me for gov id i will. but it does

@hacknorris

Oh yeah, this is EU gov website, not some rando petition website. If you didn't know now you know. If this matters to you.

This is a gov website (the one hosting the petition to be heard in the EU Parliament).

in reply to Madagascar_Sky

@Madagascar_Sky yeah but still i don't feel good pasting "gov id" from /dev/urandom and yet worse with giving out original…
in reply to hacknorris

@hacknorris @Madagascar_Sky Well, using a gov't ID to interact with the EU government seems... appropriate? Also they need to verify if votes are legitimate, so if you provide a fake ID , your vote will not count - simple as that.
Otherwise, I could write a bot that submits 600 000 votes using random names and IDs - would you want EU to accept such votes for proposing law changes?
Then maybe this is a rare case of a good use for your gov't ID...

until 31.07.2025.. it's amazing how much signatures where gathered in a very short amount of time!
i was looking at the signatures 2 weeks ago, it was at ~400k (the bar was below 50% for sure?) .. it now is almost done!

makes me happy ! 🥳 :awesome:

i'll push the link, just for the sake of completeness
