Because each user auth has it's own rate limit, this allows fedifinder to get the data fresh and instantly. - By authorizing people can use it with a private account, where the following list is not public. - It prevents people from getting data for any account instead of just their own.

I can't remember it now but this has come up before and there was a good technical reason for doing it this way.
